How To Make Sure Your Website Is BOSS
Is your website effective? How do you know? Are you sure that it’s not time for a website makeover? No really…
Examine your website closely. Are you happy with it? Do you continue to make changes to it? Do you even know how to make changes to it? Is all of your information updated? Are all of your links or images working? Is the purpose of your business clear? If you answered no to any of these questions then you are probably losing out on clients because the purpose of your business is unclear or maybe even because of poor usability.
Consider the following aspects when determining whether your website content needs a change or if your entire design needs an update:
Examining Your Content:
- Are you upfront with your audience? Does your content immediately explain what you are offering or what problems you intend to solve? If your clients/customers can’t figure out what you do or what services you’re offering after looking through your homepage then they will probably go elsewhere.
- Does your content display how you’ve solved similar problems for other clients/customers? Brag a little! If you are a designer, offer a portfolio that clients can look at. Offer case studies or testimonials if you area of service allows it.
- Is your content free of spelling and grammatical errors?
- Do you have any call to actions? Does your website tell people what their next step should be? This step may include Call us, Email Us, Visit our product page or Sign up for our mailing list. NEVER assume that someone who visits your website knows what the next step is that they should take.
- Do you give people a reason to want to join your mailing list? You’ll need a compelling reason as to why people should join your mailing list, whether it be through offering a free checklist or other downloadable.
- Is your content easy to share? Does your website incorporate share buttons that users can easily click on to share your information via email or social media? You need to make it easy for people to share your content with others in order to extend your presence.
Examining your Website Usability:
- Does your website have a nice appearance? It takes only a few seconds for clients/customers to decide whether your website is worth their interest or not. Chances are that they base their initial decision on your website appearance.

Do you have too many items in your website navigation? Only the most important pages should be included in you main navigation and everything else should fall into submenus. Also make sure that there are no more than 2 additional levels to your menu. No one wants to spend 1o minutes looking for a link.
- Does your website function properly on all browsers? A cross browser check is worth the time, because browsers like Internet Explorer have a mind of their own.
- Is your website mobile ready? Responsive web design makes it easy for the on the go user to access your website from their cell phone or tablet. If your website is hard to view on a mobile device, then chances are that you may be missing out on possible business.
So is your website BOSS? Did you feel great about your answer to every question? If not, then it looks like you have some things that you may need to work on getting resolved. Only with an effective website will your business be able to run properly, so make sure that your website is working for you and not against you.
